At-large council race endorsement attacks Biddle for his white wife

An endorsement for at-large council candidate Vince Orange from a prominent Ward 8 advisory neighborhood commissioner attacks Sekou Biddle for playing politics with his white wife.

Biddle, Orange and Sandra Seegars, who wrote the endorsement and e-mailed it to supporters early Monday morning, are all black.

In the endorsement, Seegars writes: “An annoying habit Biddle has is introducing his Caucasian wife when in Ward with predominantly Caucasian voters and not uttering that he has a wife in Wards with predominately African American voters.”

A Biddle spokesman did not immediately respond to comment.

It’s the latest sign that the campaigns to fill the at-large seat vacated by Kwame Brown when he became chairman has taken on racial tones. The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Orange was passing a flier out in Ward 8 that said, “He walks like us. He talks like us. He has a record of working for us,” over a large picture of Orange.

Seegars’ endorsement also warns that electing white Republican Patrick Mara would change “the complexion” of the council.
