Hyattsville set to annex part of University Hills

Residents in a portion of the University Hills neighborhood narrowly approved joining the City of Hyattsville this week.

The 138-103 vote in favor of the annexation Tuesday will add a residential neighborhood at the southwest corner of University Boulevard and Adelphi Road to the adjacent city. The land on which St. Mark the Evangelist Church and school sits, which lies west of Adelphi Road, will also become part of the city of Hyattsville. Several years ago, the neighborhood was part of the City for a little more than a year before a court decision split the two.

Once approved by the city council, the vote means households in the city’s newest neighborhood will now be served by Hyattsville’s police and fire departments as well as the city’s department of public works.

Robin Semas lives on Notre Dame Street in University Hills and supported the annexation initiative. Semas said being in an unincorporated neighborhood and depending on county services can be rough.
