First lady Melania Trump sent her “thoughts and prayers” to Barcelona, Spain, on Thursday after a van drove through a crowd in a busy tourist section of the city, leaving multiple people dead.
“Thoughts and prayers to #Barcelona,” the first lady tweeted, the first condolence statement from the White House.

Graphic video from the scene showed bodies lying on the ground after the vehicle drove through Barcelona’s historic Las Ramblas district, a heavily pedestrian area. Police said they are investigating the incident as terrorism.
A White House official said just prior to the first lady’s tweet that White House chief of staff John Kelly was “aware of the situation and keeping the president abreast.”
