No ‘sense of empathy’: Harris scolds Trump for golfing as hurricane approaches

Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris slammed President Trump for not having a “sense of empathy” by playing a round of golf Monday.

The California senator was responding to questions about whether the president was responding appropriately to a deadly shooting in Texas on Saturday and an impending hurricane. “He just does not have the ability to really have a sense of empathy for people who are enduring hardship or enduring pain,” she said of the president, and described the fact that he played golf today as “not surprising.”

Harris echoed previous comments she had made about Trump last month. “He generally shows no evidence of any natural ability to have empathy,” Harris said during an Aug. 8 interview on CNN, just after fatal shootings in Texas and Ohio. “I think that this president doesn’t really have the capacity to have empathy, and my heart goes out to not only the families, but also the leaders of those communities who are trying to pull it together and stand strong.”

The senator also alluded to what she perceived to be Trump’s fixation on size, noting his robustly attended campaign rallies. “His preoccupation with size, I’ll leave that for someone else to analyze,” Harris said. “But I will say that this president has used the platform that is given to the office of president of the United States in a way that has been about trying to divide our country.”
