Two people were killed in separate crashes along Route 27 in Carroll this weekend, both involving teenage drivers, state police said Sunday.

A 2006 Pontiac being driven by a 16-year-old male apparently ran a red light after 10:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Route 27 and Watersville Road in Mount Airy, according to police reports.

The Pontiac struck a Jeep Laredo that was crossing the intersection on Watersville Road, killing driver Wellborn Higgs, 78, of Mount Airy, police said. Police found alcohol in the Pontiac driver?s possession, though he has not yet been charged and his name is not being released because he is a minor, police said.

At the other end of the county, a Volkswagon Cabrio being driven by Alexandra Mary Kowalczyk, 16, of Westminster, crossed the center line as she was driving north on Route 27 near Manchester around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The Cabrio struck a Plymouth Laser RS head-on as it was going southbound, killing Kowalczyk and sending the Plymouth?s driver ? a 17-year-old Manchester resident whose name has not yet been released ? to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore City, where she remained in critical condition as of Sunday.
