Metro riders can take the subway over the holidays but may need to wait longer.

The transit agency said Thursday that it plans to keep somewhat regular hours over the holidays but run fewer trains under the Sunday-style schedule.

On Christmas Eve and Christmas, and New Year’s Eve and Day the transit agency will open the rail system at 7 a.m., a slightly later time than usual for Fridays. But it will stay open until 3 a.m. as is typical for Fridays and Saturdays.

Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule as well for the two sets of holiday weekends. It also will run a modified schedule (read: lighter) during the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Ridership is typically low during the winter holidays, according to Metro, with 64,000 riders on Christmas Day last year compared with the typical 350,000 on a typical Saturday.
