Donald Trump’s campaign manager blasted the protester whose demonstration Saturday in Reno, Nev., led to the Secret Service rushing the GOP nominee off the stage.
“Some people are spreading misinformation about the protester,” Conway said Sunday on CNN. “He had canvassed for Hillary Clinton and he had donated to her campaign. So this is a Democratic plant or operative trying to disrupt our rally.”
Conway’s claim clashes with a report that the protester, identified as 33-year-old Austyn Crites, is a registered Republican who was holding up a “Republicans against Trump” sign when he was tackled to the ground Saturday night.
Conway was also asked to respond to “misinformation” about an assassination attempt spread by Trump’s social media director Dan Scavino Jr. and Donald Trump Jr. when they retweeted a baseless claim about it Saturday evening.
The FBI reported finding no weapon on the protester, and he was released after a search and background check were conducted.
“It’s scary. All of the coverage is usually about our protesters wreaking havoc and making people feel afraid. And this certainly goes both ways,” Conway said.
Conway added that it must have been “rattling” for Donald Trump Jr. to see the incident with his father unfold live, so therefore she said she would “excuse” him for his actions.
