About 30 people were displaced after a fire at an apartment building in District Heights, officials said.
At about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, a Prince George’s County police officer saw smoke and traced it to a three-story apartment building at 1971 Rochelle Ave. The lieutenant notified dispatchers and then knocked on apartment doors to tell residents to evacuate, according to the Prince George’s Fire/EMS department.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and found that the fire was burning on all floors and in the attic. About 75 firefighters and medics battled the fire for almost an hour before it was extinguished.
No injuries were reported, but about 30 residents are displaced. A temporary shelter for the displaced residents was opened at Central High School.
Fire loss is estimated to be $500,000, officials said, and the fire’s cause is under investigation.
