Mysterious bang rocks Eldersburg

The cause of a loud explosion in the Eldersburg area Sunday night remained a mystery.

The Carroll County Emergency Communications Center received several calls from residents about the loud bang just before 10 p.m.

Many of the calls came from the area around Eldersburg Elementary School on Johnsville Road. But other calls came from residents who heard the sound from as far away as Pinyon Pine Court and Routes 32 and 26.

Sykesville firefighters spent about 45 minutes checking the area, but could find no evidence of an explosion or damage.

It could have been a meteor, but no one reported seeing a flash, said Bill Rehkopf, spokesman for the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department.

“Unless someone comes forward with information, we won?t know what it was,” he said.
