Sen. Martha McSally’s campaign has begun selling “liberal hack” T-shirts a day after she used the term to dismiss a question from a CNN reporter.
The Arizona Republican, who is facing a tough election battle against retired astronaut and U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, began selling the shirts from the domain www.liberalhack.com, a website that redirects to a fundraising page asking for at least $35 to receive the shirt.
The T-shirt features the phrase, “You’re a liberal hack, buddy,” in blue and gold lettering across the front. That is the same thing McSally, 53, told CNN reporter Manu Raju on Thursday when he attempted to ask her a question about President Trump’s impeachment.
“Martha’s in the Senate to fight for all Arizonans not to play games with the left-wing media,” the donation page said.
McSally was appointed to replace Sen. John Kyl, who retired after replacing the late Sen. John McCain. She is vying to beat Kelly, the husband of former Democratic Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords. Kelly has outpaced McSally in fundraising since he announced that he was running for her seat.
CNN’s public relations team said McSally’s remark was “extremely unbecoming for a U.S. senator to sink to this level and treat a member of the press this way for simply doing his job.”
Using a T-shirt to fundraise off viral moments is not a new tactic. During her failed bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Kamala Harris of California sold a shirt featuring a picture of her as a child after a debate confrontation over race with Joe Biden. She also sold another T-shirt with the phrase, “Dude gotta go,” a refrain she used on the campaign trail about Trump.
