President Trump responded with more attacks on George Conway when asked whether his name-calling contradicted first lady Melania Trump’s Be Best initiative, which aims to prevent cyberbullying.
Trump was asked by an ABC News reporter Wednesday on whether his tweets “fit the standard” of his wife’s initiative.
“I don’t know him. He’s a whack job, there’s no question about it,” the president said. “I think he’s doing a tremendous disservice to a wonderful wife. Kellyanne is a wonderful woman. I call him Mr. Kellyanne. The fact is, he’s doing a tremendous disservice to a wife and family.”
Kellyanne Conway serves as White House counselor to Trump and has been put in the middle as the feud between her husband and her boss has escalated in recent days.
The first lady’s office has previously asserted that her initiative cannot be tied to her husband’s use of social media amid months of scrutiny over whether the president is undermining her platform.
Trump and George Conway, a conservative lawyer, have engaged in a war of words via Twitter this week, with the president referring to Conway as a “loser” and a “husband from hell.” Conway, who does not have a psychology degree, has suggested the president has narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder.
Kellyanne Conway defended the attacks on her husband, telling Politico that Trump should be able to counterpunch.
“He left it alone for months out of respect for me,” she said Wednesday. “But you think he shouldn’t respond when somebody, a non-medical professional, accuses him of having a mental disorder? You think he should just take that sitting down?”
