Former Vice President Al Gore famously met with President Trump during the presidential transition and came away optimistic the incoming president would stay in the Paris climate accords.
But months later, Gore is searching for an explanation after Trump decided to leave the agreement.
“You’d have to ask him for the explanation. It makes no sense to me,” Gore said on “Fox News Sunday.”
Gore met with Trump at Trump Tower at the behest of President Trump’s daughter Ivanka.
Gore didn’t divulge the details of the meeting when he made the rounds on Sunday shows. But he did say that he thought there “was a chance he would come to his senses and not make the decision he had this past week.”
Gore added the Paris deal “made sense for the country.”
He said Trump could change his voluntary commitments on reducing carbon emissions.
Gore told CNN’s “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper that he has not spoken to Ivanka Trump since her father’s decision to exit Paris.
He told ABC News there’s a green technology revolution taking place in the United States even without the Paris Agreement — it’s having the impact of the Industrial Revolution at the speed of the Digital Revolution, he said — but he’s still concerned.
“We’re still not changing fast enough because it’s not just the scientific warning us now, it’s Mother Nature,” Gore said. “Every night on the evening news it’s like a nature hike through the Book of Revelation.”
