Here come fierce winds

The strong winds ravaging the region are barring certain vehicles from crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge today and knocking out power lines.

The Maryland Transportation Authority will prohibit empty house andbox trailers from crossing the four-mile span. High-profile vehicles and motorcycles are advised to use caution on the bridge.

Restrictions are placed on bridge traffic when sustained wind speeds at between 40 and 49 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the region until 1 a.m. Tuesday. NWS stations in Annapolis were reporting winds at 23 miles per hour.

The Harry Nice Bridge in southern Maryland, which brings Route 301 over the Potomac River, is also under wind restrictions as well, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation¹s Web site.

Baltimore Gas and Electric is warning its customer of potential power outages, and has ramped its power restoration efforts that could extend into Wednesday, officials said.

As of noon, BGE was reporting 7,500 customers without power, with the most (2,350) in Anne Arundel County.
