Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is facing impeachment hearings and negotiations for his resignation, kicking off a tough week for the embattled Republican.
A hearing started on Monday morning in the Alabama House Judiciary Committee with a verbal presentation of an investigation that found Bentley used state law enforcement resources and intimidation to cover up his affair with an adviser. Bentley has denied the accusation and said last week he would not resign.
AL.com reported Monday that Bentley could become the first Alabama governor in history to be impeached, if he doesn’t step down by the end of the week as is rumored.
According to the report, the Alabama Ethics Commission issued four findings of probable cause that Bentley violated campaign finance and ethics laws. Those allegations have been turned over to a court to prosecutors for possible charges.
Local media reported earlier Monday Bentley is unlikely to make it through the full week as governor.
Attorneys representing the governor are trying to allow him to resign and plead to lesser charges, according to the report. A resignation could come by Wednesday.
