BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — A 35-year-old inmate is in critical condition after apparently being beaten by other prisoners at a Bakersfield detention facility.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the inmate was hospitalized after being found inside his cell at the Lerdo Pretrial Detention facility with severe head injuries about 9 p.m. Saturday.

Detective Sgt. Gary Williams said Sunday that investigators planned to interview witnesses.

According to the agency’s website, the detention facility holds up to 1,200 inmates.
