Tax help available for D.C. residents

It’s crunch time for D.C. residents who haven’t finished, or for that matter started, their income taxes. But the District’s Office of Tax and Revenue is throwing a bone to procrastinators.

Now through April 17, when taxes are due, OTR’s walk-in service center at 941 North Capitol St. NE will be open from 8:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. Telephone help, at 202-727-4TAX, also will be available during the sametimes.

At the center, OTR employees provide free preparation of D.C. residents’ individual income tax returns.

“This service is available to everyone, regardless of income,” Sherryl Hobbs Newman, deputy chief financial officer for tax and revenue, said in a statement. “It is important that we provide taxpayers an avenue to meet their tax obligation.”

Taxpayers must bring a copy of their completed federal tax return, supporting W-2 forms and schedule, a valid driver’s license or state identification and any other required information. They should also expect to wait for the free help.

Taxes are due two days later than normal this year because April 15 falls on a Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the District.
