Assange to face questions from Swedish prosecutors

Julian Assange will face questions in London next week over the 2010 allegations of sexual assault that led to his confinement in the Ecuadorean Embassy, Swedish prosecutors said Monday.

“Ecuador has granted the Swedish request for legal assistance in criminal matters and the hearing will be conducted by an Ecuadorian prosecutor,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. The statement added a DNA sample will be taken, “provided that Julian Assange agrees to it.”

The office said the interview would be conducted on Nov. 14 by deputy public prosecutor Ingrid Isgren and a police inspector.

Assange has been in the embassy since June 2012 to avoid extradition on charges of sexual assault, which he has denied and contends are politically motivated. The WikiLeaks founder has been responsible for leaking millions of classified or otherwise private documents obtained from governments around the world since 2006.

The statute of limitations for three of the charges Assange faced expired in August 2015. He still faces an allegation of rape that will not expire until 2020.
