Democratic 2020 presidential candidate John Delaney on Thursday earned the approval of the Nashua Telegraph’s editorial board in New Hampshire.
“Former Maryland congressman John Delaney appears to be an underdog in his bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Nevertheless, we find him somewhat impressive,” the editorial board wrote.
Delaney, who was the first Democrat to officially launch a 2020 White House bid, has visited the early-voting state 13 times. Since he announced he was running in July 2017, he’s also traveled 21 times to Iowa.
The Nashua Telegraph on Thursday particularly praised Delaney’s “relatively reasonable” approach to raising the top capital gains tax rate from 20 percent and his lack of support for “left-wing globalist agenda of open borders.”
“Considering the aggressively divisive rhetoric of some on the political left these days, we found Delaney’s approach rather refreshing,” the newspaper wrote. “We appreciate his thoughtful and measured outlook in seeking the nation’s highest office.”

Delaney, who represented a Western Maryland district in the House from 2013-19, has a tough pathway to clinch the Democratic Party’s nomination as bigger names enter the race. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren have either filed to create presidential exploratory committees or formally announced their candidacies, as has Delaney’s former House colleague Tulsi Gabbard. Obama administration housing secretary Julian Castro; South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg; and West Virginia state Sen. Richard Ojeda are additional contenders for the party’s nod.
