MSNBC host says people can afford higher prices: Need to put inflation ‘in perspective’

MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle said that it is a “dirty little secret” that people can afford groceries amid striking record inflation rates.

Ruhle claimed that the current 30-year-high inflation levels and record-high consumer prices have been predicted and need to be put “in perspective.”

“The dirty little secret here, Willie, while nobody likes to pay more, on average, we have the money to do so,” Ruhle told NBC’s Sunday Today host Willie Geist. “Household savings hit a record high over the pandemic — we didn’t really have anywhere to go out and spend.”

The consumer price index jumped 0.9% in October after reaching 0.4% in September, according to the Labor Department.

“Nobody knows when exactly [prices] are going down, but you have to put this in perspective. This inflation is not in isolation, and the government predicted it is going to be a challenging recovery … all tied to COVID,” Ruhle said. “We need to put all of this in perspective. This time last year … nobody had a vaccine. Now, 200 million Americans do and we’re seeing this push of demand, and that’s pushing up pricing.”

Ruhle also argued that the United States is expecting record-high retail sales this year and that home values and the stock market are doing very well.

“While the stock market isn’t the economy, you’ve got over half American households with some investments in the market,” she explained.

Some took to social media to blast Ruhle for her remarks.

“The ex-Deutsche Bank lady is here to tell you poors to just pay up,” Becket Adams tweeted.

“Has Stephanie Rhule ever actually met anyone who lives paycheck to paycheck?” tweeted Meghan McCain.
