GOP lawmaker: Trump’s vote fraud claim undermines Constitution

Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger believes President Trump’s claim that between three and five million people voted illegally in the election undermines the American Constitution, and the legitimacy of U.S. institutions.

“This basically undermines the idea of an election, this undermines the Constitution,” he said on CNN.

Trump believes he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton in the election because millions of people voted illegally by either casting multiple votes or voting despite being ineligible to do so. But Trump hasn’t offered any proof of fraud on that scale.

Kinzinger said Trump and other people who claim to have evidence of illegal voting need to make it public because they’re otherwise hurting the country.

“You have to show proof of that, you have to show why you’re undermining the Constitution of the United States,” he said.

He put the claims in the same category as the Russian influence campaign on the election that resulted in emails from the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta being hacked and released publicly.

“I wanna see a Constitution and an election system that’s protected against hacking and outside interference … and it’s protected against allegations of illegal votes if they didn’t happen,” he said.
