The White House declined to speculate on whether there had been internal conversations about President Joe Biden pardoning his son Hunter or brother James should their foreign business dealings land them in legal hot water.
“That’s not a hypothetical I’m going to entertain. I don’t have anything to add,” White House communications director Kate Bedingfield said Thursday.

Bedingfield recycled iterations of the response to a slew of questions, including about Biden’s knowledge regarding his son’s and brother’s complicated international financial interests. She had earlier stood by the president’s insistence during the campaign that his son’s investments were not unethical given his father’s public office.
“Is it your understanding it’s the president’s view that as he looks at all of Hunter Biden’s business dealings with his uncle, that neither Hunter Biden nor James Biden committed any crimes or did anything that was unlawful?” another reporter asked.
“We pointed to statements that were made in the fall of 2020 when we addressed these questions,” she said. “I don’t have anything additional to add from this podium.”
Hunter Biden has been under federal investigation since 2018 to see whether he or his connections broke tax, money laundering, and foreign lobbying laws in countries such as China and Russia.
The younger Biden, who denies any wrongdoing, has not been charged with any offenses. At the same time, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware is seeking grand jury testimony concerning his foreign income from the likes of Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma Holdings. Multiple outlets have also confirmed the authenticity of problematic emails from his purported laptop.

According to a Senate Republican report released in 2020, Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley obtained Treasury documents showing “potential criminal activity relating to transactions among and between Hunter Biden, his family, and his associates with Ukrainian, Russian, Kazakh and Chinese nationals” while Biden was President Barack Obama’s No. 2.
