The Manassas City Police Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit organization serving the Manassas Police Department and community, awarded scholarships to 10 rising and returning college students at a ceremony held at the city’s police headquarters recently. It was the foundation’s seventh annual scholarship presentation. The police association with the help of local businesses created the John D. Conner III Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2002 for children of Manassas City Police Department employees as well as one qualifying student from the city’s high school. The fund is named after Sgt. Conner, a Vietnam veteran, the only Manassas police officer to die in the line of duty. He was killed in July 1988. The foundation maintains the memorial fund with a 5K charitable race in Old Town Manassas every summer. All proceeds go to fund’s scholarships.
