Nine dead and one injured after multivehicle crash in Las Vegas

Several people died, and one was left critically injured after multiple cars were involved in a deadly crash in Nevada on Saturday afternoon.

The six-vehicle car crash involved 15 people, nine of whom died, and one was taken to the hospital in critical condition, Alexander Cuevas, a spokesman with the North Las Vegas Police Department, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Cuevas described the accident as “chaotic.”

“We have not seen a mass casualty traffic collision like this before,” said Cuevas. “Please make this a safer community by slowing down. Pay attention to speed limits.”

The driver of a maroon Dodge Challenger, who was among those pronounced dead, had been speeding when he ran a red light and hit multiple vehicles, according to Cuevas.

“Our thoughts and our prayers are with the families who are experiencing a tremendous and unnecessary loss due to a careless and senseless act,” Pamela Goynes-Brown, a member of the North Las Vegas Council, said during a press conference.

Other vehicles involved in the accident included a Toyota, a Ford Fusion, a Mercedes-Benz SUV, a Hyundai Tucson, and a tan Chevrolet Malibu.

Cuevas said Saturday evening that the surrounding area would continue to experience road closures as a result of the car crash.

The incident follows another six-vehicle crash on Jan. 10 that left four people dead. A red Cadillac had been heading northbound in southbound lanes when it hit a Toyota pickup truck.

Nevada experienced 382 vehicle fatalities during 2021, making it the deadliest year on the roads in 14 years. This represented an 18% increase in crashes statewide.
