An MV-22 Osprey crash-landed in shallow water off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Monday night local time, and all five crew members aboard were rescued, according to the Marine Corps.
The crew members were being treated for injuries at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Foster after they were airlifted by an HH-60G helicopter from the 33rd Rescue Squadron, the statement said.
The Osprey belonged to Marine Aircraft Group 26. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the landing.
This is the first mishap involving the tilt-rotor aircraft this year, according to statistics kept by the Naval Safety Center. The aircraft takes off like a helicopter and tilts its nacelles to fly like an airplane.
Last week, a Marine pilot was killed when his F/A-18 Hornet crashed off the coast of Japan. The plane went down about 120 miles southeast of Iwakuni and searchers later recovered the body of Capt. Jake Frederick.
