Majority opposes Trump rule cutting off Planned Parenthood Title X funding: Poll

The Trump administration’s new requirement that federally-funded family planning clinics be housed separately from abortion clinics, a rule that would cut some funding for Planned Parenthood, is unpopular across party lines, according to new polling.

Fifty-eight percent of the public opposes the Trump administration’s Title X funding rule, according to the Public Opinion and Knowledge on Reproductive Health Policy poll released Friday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, versus 38% that support it.

And 74% of women oppose the Trump administration’s decision to fund organizations such as Obria, a chain of abstinence-only natural family planning clinics.

The administration nullified the requirement that Title X recipients also offer pregnant women advice about adoption or abortion options. In its place, “non-traditional” centers — namely, those that offer natural family planning or abstinence-only education — are encouraged to participate in the Title X program.

Multiple federal judges have halted the Trump administration’s rule. District court judges in Maine, Vermont, Washington, Minnesota, and more, are now fighting against Title X rules, placing injunctions on them before new guidelines can be put into action.

Those surveyed were asked if they would support cutting federal funds to clinics that also provide abortions, but the question stipulated that “none of the funds could be used for abortions.” Federal funds are generally not permitted to pay for abortions, but anti-abortion activists have said that Title X funding frees up resources for clinics like Planned Parenthood to use for abortions.
