A CSX freight train struck and killed a pedestrian in Gaithersburg on Monday afternoon, police and transit officials said.

The train, which was traveling toward Frederick and was carrying only cargo, hit the person at about 1:20 p.m. in the Chestnut Road area, said Officer Amy Daum, a Montgomery County police spokeswoman.

The MARC Brunswick line was closed due to the incident, but is expected to reopen by about 4:30 p.m., according to the Maryland Transit Administration.

Daum said police are still working to establish the person’s identity, age and gender. It’s not yet known why the person was near the train tracks.
