Wolf Trap announces ’07 season, new eco program

The performing arts center at Wolf Trap announced its 2007 summer season schedule Monday. President and Chief Executive Officer Terrence Jones also laid out plans to make Wolf Trap — a National Park Service site — greener.

Wolf Trap is creating a national advisory council for the arts and environment, chaired by Norman Mineta, former secretary of transportation. The council’s first task is a study of Wolf Trap’s environmental impact and how to minimize it, Jones said.

Wolf Trap uses recycled materials at its concession stands, funds a shuttle service from the nearest Metro station and provides recycling bins for concertgoers who bring picnics.

The council will consider planting more trees, purchasing biodiesel or hybrid vehicles for Wolf Trap, and how to go paperless, said Jones, who believes the arts have a role to play in raising public awareness of environmental concerns.

“I believe arts have a role, an obligation, in our sustainable future because arts have long been a bastion for causes of all types,” Jones said.

Art and the environment have long been linked, Jones said, pointing to examples such as Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” concertos and Claude Monet’s water lily paintings.

Wolf Trap also rolled out the schedule for its 2007 season. Ticket sales begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Call 877-WOLFTRAP or visit www.wolftrap.org.
