Double-digit jump in Virginia college costs

New statistics show that Virginia undergraduates can expect to pay an average of 10.6 percent more in tuition and fees in fiscal 2011, which begins Oct. 1. The State Council of Higher Education in Virginia released a report Monday detailing the state’s rising cost of public higher education. Students at four-year colleges will pay $838 more in the coming fiscal year than last, while students at community colleges will pay about $504 more. The report said the increases are expected to be in step with other states. — Liz Essley
