Plane diverted to Virginia after passenger dies

A New York-to-Miami flight was diverted to Virginia after a passenger died on board.

About 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, 20 minutes into the flight, a 73-year-old man began experiencing discomfort but refused any assistance, said Wayne Shank, executive director of the Norfolk International Airport. The passenger later began having difficulty breathing and the became unconscious. A doctor on board and crew members administered CPR and used a heart shock device.

The plane was diverted and landed about 8 p..m. in Norfolk, where paramedics unsuccessfully tried to revive the man. Passengers were removed from the plane while authorities investigated the cause and manner of death.
