Virginia Democrats are getting help from the national party in their bid to maintain control of the state Senate, but Republicans continue to counter with aid from Gov. Bob McDonnell.
The Democratic National Committee has contributed $100,000 to the Senate Democratic Caucus, pushing the group’s on-hand cash stash to $1.6 million, according to the nonpartisan money tracker Virginia Public Access Project.
Not to be outdone, McDonnell, through his Opportunity Virginia PAC, gave $256,000 Monday to the state Republican Party. McDonnell’s PAC has doled out nearly $700,000 since the last campaign finance reports came out Oct. 17. To date he’s given nearly $3.5 million to the state party and GOP legislative candidates.
Democrats are fighting to maintain a 22-18 majority in the state Senate — their only shot of holding on to some power in Richmond, where Republicans control the House of Delegates and the governorship.
