Gallaudet protesters promise to keep up struggle

A day after the chair of Gallaudet University’s board of trustees became collateral damage in the struggle over the university’s presidency, protesters vowed to continue until their demands are met.

Gallaudet, the world’s only liberal arts college for the deaf, is scheduled to hold its graduation Friday. Critics say they’ll keep up their protests until Jane K. Fernandes steps down as president-select.

Protesters have camped out on the Northeast campus for nine days since Fernandes was announced as the ninth president of Gallaudet. They say her appointment was rigged and that Fernandes is too abrasive to lead the college.

On Tuesday, Celia May Baldwin, interim chair of the board of trustees, said that she had had enough. She resigned in an e-mail, saying that she had been threatened.

A protesters’ group issued its own statement, saying it regretted Baldwin’s departure. But the group said it won’t back down.
