GOP resolution instructs people to ‘stand at attention’ for the national anthem

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., has introduced a resolution saying it’s the sense of the House that the best way to respond when the national anthem is played is to “face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over their heart.”

Her resolution, introduced Monday, would amount to guidance for everyone in the United States, at a time when more and more people are deciding to take a knee when the anthem is played at sporting events.

President Trump has criticized the NFL in particular for allowing players to take a knee, and has suggested that those players should be fired.

Blackburn’s resolution notes that the Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key, and became the national anthem of the U.S. in 1931.
