Aberdeen police say an officer shot and critically wounded a 22-year-old man who pointed a gun at him outside a Route 40 motel Monday morning.
Police responded to Ken?s Motel in the 600 block of South Philadelphia Boulevard at 11:20 a.m. for reports of a suspicious person, said spokesman Sgt. Fred Budnick.
A manager at the hotel directed the officer, whose name police were not releasing Monday afternoon, to the rear of the building. When the officer found the suspect behind the motel, the man produced a handgun and confronted the officer, Budnick said. The officer ordered the suspect to drop the gun, and when the man raised the weapon the officer shot him several times.
“We?re trying to piece together if he was a former occupant of the motel, or if he had family staying there,” Budnick said.
The suspect, whose name also has yet to be released by police, was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore where he was in critical condition as of Monday afternoon, Budnick said.
The officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the results of an investigation.
