The District Department of Transportation announced it will be bringing the option to pay by cell phone for 17,000 meters across the city this summer.
But using your cell phone to track the time left on your meter and add minutes even when you’re not nearby won’t come free. A DDOT spokesman says the per transaction fee isn’t set yet, but it’s expected to be 30 to 35 cents. For a meter that sets the price an hour at $2, that could be an additional 17 percent tacked onto the cost of parking.
