‘Just a scared man’: DC mayor expresses solidarity with anti-Trump protesters

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser sided with protesters in the city after President Trump criticized her.

On Saturday, Bowser fired back at Trump after he accused her of keeping city police from getting involved in demonstrations in Washington, D.C., mocking him as a “scared man” who “hides behind his fence.”

“My police department will always protect DC and all who are in it whether I agree with them (such as those exercising their First Amendment Right) or those I don’t (namely, @realDonaldTrump),” Bowser tweeted.

“While he hides behind his fence afraid/alone, I stand w/ people peacefully exercising their First Amendment Right after the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & hundreds of years of institutional racism There are no vicious dogs & ominous weapons. There is just a scared man.”

Trump chided Bowser on Saturday for not allowing law enforcement to contain protests outside the executive mansion Friday night, noting she is “always looking for money and help.”

“As you saw last night, they were very cool & very professional. Never let it get out of hand. Thank you! On the bad side, the D.C. Mayor, @MurielBowser, who is always looking for money & help, wouldn’t let the D.C. Police get involved. ‘Not their job.’ Nice!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The White House was briefly put on lockdown Friday night as thousands of protesters gathered outside its gates to protest the death of George Floyd. Several members of the press were moved inside the West Wing of the White House for their safety.
