The Port of Baltimore Tricentennial Committee knew that the port?s 300th birthday was going to a big undertaking.
Baltimore-based Weinberg Harris and Associates was chosen as a partner in the yearlong media campaign for the port?s 300th anniversary.
The campaign, which began in January, and will run through December, is a joint partnership between the Port of Baltimore Tricentennial Committee and Weinberg Harris and Associates marketing firm.
“The key to this campaign is education and raising awareness about the Port of Baltimore,” said Nicole Halsey, senior account manager at Weinberg Harris. “We wanted to share how the Port affects all of our lives every day ? the cars we drive, food we eat, paper we write on …”
The overall marketing and public relations strategies included the port?s birthday celebration at Lexington Market and Camden Yards, Baltimore?s Waterfront Festival, the Ro/Ro Rodeo and more, as well as the creation of brochures and commemorative merchandise.
Halsey said she is excited about the second half and conclusion of the campaign. “The list continues to grow as the momentum about the celebration enhances,” she said.
The Fells Point Fun Festival on Oct. 7 and 8 and the Working Waterfront Appreciation Weekend on Oct. 14 and 15, as well asthe PortFest and Tug Baltimores 100th Anniversary on Oc. 21 and 22, are all included in the second half of the campaign.
“Ever since I?ve been around, I?ve been pushing for due recognition of the port,” said committee Chairman Helen Delich Bentley, whom the Port was named after during the 300th birthday celebration. “Like a ship in the night, the port slips past most Marylanders. I think now that more people recognize that, hey, we do have a port.”
Still to come is a book authored by Bentley and F. Key Kidder about the history of the Port and a four-year educational program to be implemented into area schools. Bentley says the program with the Maryland Department of Education, a curriculum designed for students, will examine four components: the history of the port, the job opportunities, the environmental aspects and the economic value of the port.
