Citizens for Trump endorses Roy Moore while Trump supports his challenger

Citizens for Trump endorsed Judge Roy Moore in a primary run-off election for Alabama’s U.S. Senate seat — but that’s not the candidate favored by President Trump.

“The Judge has proven to be a great man of principle and integrity by his conduct,” Tim Selaty Sr., executive director for Citizens for Trump said in a statement. “We’re honored to support Judge Moore and believe he’s the clear choice to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate and the only candidate who’ll work closely with President Trump to Make America Great again for all its citizenry.”

However, Trump has endorsed Roy’s challenger, Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., and will join Strange Sunday at a campaign rally.

“I am proud to have President Trump’s endorsement in this race and I am looking forward to his trip to Alabama,” Strange said in a statement.

Former Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, made appearances at a debate watch party and rally Thursday night in Mongtomery, Ala., to support Moore.

“I wanted to come because I have so much appreciation for President Donald Trump … Sometimes he gets bad advice,” Gohmert said regarding why Trump backed Strange.

Moore and Strange’s run-off election is next week. The successful candidate will continue to the general election to determine who will serve the remainder of the term started by former Sen. Jeff Sessions, who is now Trump’s attorney general.
