A Brazilian singer was killed along with four others in a plane crash in Brazil on Friday.
Marilia Mendonca, 26, also known as “The Queen of Suffering” due to her “angst-filled ballads,” died in a small plane crash in Minas Gerais, Brazil, The New York Times reported.
Among the others who died were Mendonca’s producer, her uncle, who was also her assistant, and the copilot and pilot of the aircraft, the singer’s press office said.

“The whole country receives in shock the news of the passing of the young country singer Marilia Mendonca, one of the greatest artists of her generation,” Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said in a statement on Twitter.

Mendonca, who had been traveling to Caratinga for a concert, was a part of the Brazilian country-styled music genre called “sertanejo.”
The Brazilian police issued a statement on Twitter that said “civil police” and an “expert team” had identified the five bodies from the plane crash.
Bolsonaro said Mendonca had used her “unique voice, charisma and music” to win “the affection and admiration of all of us,” according to his Twitter statement.

While some had viewed Mendonca’s music as being “corny,” her songs provided “a woman’s perspective that hasn’t been heard much in sertanejo’s machismo culture,” according to an NPR music review.
