A quick guide to this year’s ShamrockFest

ShamrockFest has practically become tradition in the D.C. area, but a little more raucous than, say, the Cherry Blossom Festival. With more than 40 acts, food and drink, and other fun activities, it’s the perfect excuse to shake those winter blues and cut loose.

The Music: Yes, there are plenty of Irish bands like the Tossers, and Train is definitely a solid headliner. But it’s the Roots that’s the main draw here. Anyone who saw the Roots at the 9:30 Club a couple of months back knows it puts on one of the best live shows around. Also check out the numerous DJs and local bands throughout the day spread across 10 stages.

The Food: Nine area Irish bars will have various selections to choose from. Oh, and why is that VIP ticket so much more expensive? Part of the reason is that it includes all your beer. Nice.

The Fun: An Irish Village, carnival rides and games, college basketball on a big screen, strolling entertainers and a kids zone should provide plenty of entertainment if for some reason more than 40 bands isn’t sufficient.

The Chest Bump Against Cancer: ShamrockFest is attempting to break the record for the group chest bump. Proceeds from the $12 registration go to the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure, and bragging rights go to everyone who participates. Registration is from 11:30 a.m. to noon, the bump at 12:30 p.m.
