The mayor of Flint, Mich. said Monday she was not impressed by the governor’s promise to drink a glass of water from the city’s supply every day to prove it was no longer toxic due to high lead levels.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has pledged to drink tap water to prove it was safe, telling the press he filled up three gallons at a constituent’s residence and will drink from that source through the rest of the month.
But Flint Mayor Dr. Karen Weaver ignored his comment, telling Alan Colmes in a radio interview late Monday even if the consumption of the tainted water doesn’t lead to his death, it could still lead to other illnesses and diseases.
“We’ve been drinking it for two years. You know we’re coming up on our two year anniversary. And we still don’t have the funds necessary to get the pipes fixed we need to fix,” Weaver said. “So drinking it for a month at his age doesn’t impress me when we have young children that have been damaged by this, that have brain damage and cognitive deficits as a result of this. We know we have people who have died of Legionnaire’s, that doesn’t impress me.”
Weaver wouldn’t agree with Colmes that the move was a PR stunt, instead redirecting the conversation to who was to blame for the ongoing incident.
“We hold the state the most responsible…but need federal assistance as well. So it’s a state and federal issue,” Weaver finished.
