CHICAGO (AP) — Leaders from seven churches on Chicago’s west side are having a “Unity Fest” to prepare children returning to school.
The event will be 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday on the streets outside Greater Rock Church.
More than 800 bags of schools supplies and books will be given away. The churches will provide free meals, give away clothing and conduct activities such as jumping events, basketball tournaments and martial arts demonstrations. There also will be health screenings and voter registration.
The festivities begin with a combined church service on an outdoor stage at 12:30 p.m. Community recognition awards will be presented at 2 p.m., community dinners at 2:30 p.m. and a combined prayer over the young people and school-supplies giveaway at 5 p.m.
The seven churches represent over 3,000 members.
