Saudi King Salman tells Trump: Syrian regime ‘brought destruction to their own country’

Saudi King Salman seems to have condemned the Syrian government while meeting with President Trump in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

CBS News’ Neil Grasso caught a portion of a conversation going on between Trump and King Salman. According to a press pool report, King Salman appears to have said that the Syrian regime “brought destruction to their own country.”

The entire quote was: “Syria too used to be one of the most advanced countries. We used to get our professors from Syria. They served our kingdom. Unfortunately, they too brought destruction to their own country. You could destroy a country in mere seconds, but it takes a lot of effort.”

Louise Dufresne from CBS News said while the quote should be exact that reporters should still check it back against the tape, which wasn’t immediately available.

Syria has been embroiled in a deadly civil war for six years, leaving about 400,000 Syrians dead, according to the United Nations.

When the U.S. launched a missile barrage at a Syrian airfield back in April following a chemical weapons attack, Saudi Arabia praised Trump for making a “courageous decision.” The U.S. also bombed a militia supported by Syrian President Bashar Assad this week.
