If the toys on display at Geppi?s Entertainment Museum?s newest exhibit look familiar, it?s probably because you have them at your house.
Out of the Box is an interactive show featuring current toys and play-related items that represent the popular icons of today. The display is quite different from the museum?s usual exhibits, which focus on past toys and characters that have been significant in the development of the nation.
“The mission of the museum has always been to talk about the toys and characters that shaped American entertainment. Our idea was, if our mission was to talk about what shapes the past, we should also be casting an eye to what will shape entertainment in the future,” said Dr. Arnold Blumberg, GEM curator.
The exhibit will feature toys from popular icons like Hannah Montana and Indiana Jones. “It will allow visitors young and old to get hands-on with pop culture by giving everyone an up-close look at the characters that are popular right this minute, with toys you can actually touch and play with ? unlike most of the toys at GEM, which are behind glass,” said Courtney Jenkins, marketing manager at Gemstone Publishing, a division of Geppi?s Entertainment Publishing.
Blumberg said that Out of the Box allows parents to see the things that are shaping their children?s view of the country and the world around them. “So much of our identity is shaped by leisure time. Here?s a great opportunity to interact with things that are in the toy store right now.”
