NBCUniversal is considering joining a growing list of film companies in blacklisting states that pass strong limits on abortion.
“We fully expect that the heartbeat bills and similar laws in various states will face serious legal challenges and will not go into effect while the process proceeds in court,” NBCUniversal told the Hill on Thursday.
“If any of these laws are upheld, it would strongly impact our decision-making on where we produce our content in the future,” the company said.
NBCUniversal’s announcement comes after similar statements made by Netflix and Disney. All three major companies would consider pulling productions out of Georgia and canceling scheduled filming in the state if its anti-abortion ban is enforced. The law bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has promised to push forward and fight for the law.
“Georgia is a state that values life,” Kemp said at the law’s May 7 signing ceremony. “We protect the innocent, we champion the vulnerable, we stand up and speak for those that are unable to speak for themselves.”
Numerous Hollywood actors and producers are calling for boycotts on Georgia and other states for passing stiff regulations aimed at curbing abortion.
Georgia, known as “Y’allywood,” sports the third-largest film and production sector in the United States. Production companies could deal a significant blow to the state’s economy with an effective boycott.
