More than 24 hours after several small explosions in Pepco’s underground equipment broke out windows in several buildings in the Logan Circle neighborhood of D.C., a company spokeswoman said the utility it did not know what caused the blasts.
Spokeswoman Mary Beth Hutchinson saidSunday afternoon that Pepco still was investigating what caused three or four explosions that occurred at about 1 p.m. Saturday near 13th and T streets NW, adding that it would be a while before damaged equipment could be fixed.
“Our crew was inspecting it for some time and could not find a cause,” Hutchinson said. She said damage to the equipment and the explosions did not “add up.”
Between four and six manholes were displaced in the explosions and windows in some nearby buildings broke because of the force of the explosions.
“Some of those windows were three stories up,” Hutchinson said. She did not know how many windows had been broken.
A District fire and emergency medical services official could not be reached Sunday.
A small number of residents lost power for a time Saturday, Hutchinson said. Power has been rerouted to the customers. There were no widespread power outages reported Sunday.
