A Howard County detective was released from the hospital after being hit by a car when he stopped to help a disabled vehicle Wednesday.
“He is expected to make a full recovery,” said Sherry Llewellyn, a spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department.
The driver of the car that hit the detective, Marquita Alexandra Mann, 21, of the 100 block of South Culver Street in Baltimore, was charged with failure to control speed to avoid a collision, according to the police report.
The accident happened at about 4 p.m. near Patapsco State Park when Detective Steven Lampe stopped in the fast lane of westbound Route 40 behind a disabled vehicle. Mann hit Lampe?s car, pushing it into the disabled vehicle. The crash tied up traffic for two hours.
Lampe was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Mann was taken to and released from Howard County General Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Two passengers in Mann?s car also had minor injuries. The driver of the disabled vehicle was not injured.
About 60 collisions involving police vehicles have been reported this year in Howard, Llewellyn said.
Statistics from 2005 were not available at press time, but Llewellyn said the number of collisions has decreased since last year, “likely because we have not had a lot of bad winter weather.”
