A West Baltimore man was shot in the stomach Monday night in the parking lot outside an Applebee?s restaurant at the Eastpoint Mall, Baltimore County police said.
Authorities were called to the parking lot at about 8:40 p.m. and found George Thompson, 32, of Baltimore, suffering from a gunshot wound, a police spokesman said.
Thompson was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, an official there said.
Investigators were unsure of the motive for the shooting and had no suspects after interviewing Thompson, who was “only able to give very little information” on it, Cpl. Michael Hill said.
Witnesses reported watching three men get in two vehicles ? a dark Oldsmobile and a black Cadillac Escalade ? and leave the scene, Hill said.
Seventeen assaults were reported at the Eastpoint Mall in the first six months of this year, five fewer than the same time period last year, police statistics show. Eastpoint also had slightly fewer assault cases than Towson Town Center and The Avenue at White Marsh, each of which reported 19 between January and July of this year.
Assaults can include a physical fight between teenagers or a shooting, among other things, Hill said.
Considering the volume of patrons filing through each of those shopping centers every day, Hill said, “those numbers are really relatively low, and really do suggest that for the most part these are safe places to go.”
Anyone with information about the shooting at Eastpoint Mall can report it anonymously by calling Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-756-2587, or can talk to Baltimore County police at 410-307-2020.
