Matthew McConaughey thinks the United States’s development is alright, alright, alright.
McConaughey, widely believed to be a centrist alternative to incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott in Texas’s gubernatorial election, argued the U.S. is experiencing developmental problems akin to the growing pains that often accompany puberty.
“Let’s … remember that we are babies. You know? As a country, we are basically going through puberty in comparison to other countries’ timelines,” he said in a Fourth of July message. “And we’re going to go through growing pains, and we are going through growing pains, … and this is good because we’ve got to keep learning. We’ve got to keep maturing.”

The Dazed and Confused star called the U.S. an “aspiration” because it’s “constantly in motion, … trying to get wiser, trying to get braver, trying to dream more, trying to do more, trying to be more fair, [and trying to] take the right kind of responsibilities to gain the right kinds of freedoms.”
“We’ve got to keep realizing that we’re a place where our individual pursuits and desires need to be appreciative and supportive of our collective responsibilities as Americans, hence the United States of America,” he continued, later adding, “We are all in this together.”
McConaughey asked his followers to reflect on “where we’ve come from, where we are, and where and how we want to go on the way to being the best we can be,” suggesting that could be “a song in each of us.”

McConaughey, a Texas native, previously employed similar wording to denounce rising partisanship amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’ve got to take care of each other right now. We have a collective purpose. … We’re in this together,” he said in May 2020.
Republicans in the state have expressed a desire that McConaughey sit the race out, with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who supports Abbott, suggesting the actor would be a threat.
“He’s a very charming, very affable guy,” Cruz said of McConaughey. “He’s a movie star, and a good-looking, charming, affable movie star can be a really formidable candidate on the ballot. And I hope that doesn’t happen, but you know what? He’s going to have to make his own decision whether he’s going to run or not.”

Abbott, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, already faces a primary challenge from Allen West, who announced last month he will be resigning from his position as chairman of the Texas Republican Party, effective July 11.
Abbott, who is seeking a third term, won reelection in 2018 with 55.8% of the vote.
