Maryland is a high-risk area for Lyme disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To help prevent Lyme disease, which is spread through the bite of an infected tick, Howard County Health Department officials recommend:

» Avoiding tick-infested areas and staying on the center of trails when hiking;

» Using insect repellent containing 20 percent to 30 percent DEET for adults and 10 percent for children;

» Wearing long pants and long sleeves in light colors;

» Checking for ticks after being outdoors.

Lyme disease can cause symptoms such as fever, headaches, fatigue and a bull?s-eye rash.
