A major pipeline delivering the bulk of the East Coast’s gasoline supply broke this week, forcing speculation about supply cuts that could drive up fuel prices.
The Colonial Pipeline was closed on Sept. 9, which runs from Houston to New York, after a leak of nearly 250,000 gallons of fuel was detected in Alabama.

The major pipeline provides gasoline to 50 million residents on the East Coast every day. The company that runs the pipeline said it is unknown what caused the leak. The lost capacity is not supposed to be restored for a week, at least, the company said in its most recent update.
Reports say there is now an industry-wide scramble to find a way to shore up the lost supply. As of Friday, gasoline prices have not budged along the pipeline’s route.
